Vuillard's early work reflected the Nabi aesthetic in decoration, if not in scale. He produced small paintings, usually of women in interiors, sewing, drinking coffee, or conversing. (These intimate indoor paintings had little resemblance to the sun-drenched works of the impressionists.) Vuillard filled the surface with pattern, adding tiny points and lines of color to decorate clothes, tablecloths, wallpaper, and floors. He would later use these dense patterning techniques on a grand scale in Place Vintimille.
