Pierre Bonnard, Promenade des Nourrices, Frise des Fiacres (Nursemaids' Promenade, Frieze of Carriages), 1899, lithographic screen, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Virginia and Ira Jackson Collection, Partial and Promised Gift 1999.138.8

In his next screen, Nursemaids' Promenade, Frieze of Carriages, Bonnard created a contiguous scene over four panels. The asymmetrical composition and the large expanse of unpainted canvas show the influence of Japanese art. Bonnard was also aware of the screen's potential to change the composition. For example, depending on how the artist folded this screen, the nanny and her charges could appear standing still on the street (center panels pointing backward) or charging ahead after their hoops (center panels pointing forward).

Click on Bonnard's screen to see the center panels fold in and out.
