Place Vintimille detail by Edouard
Edouard Vuillard, Place Vintimille (detail), 1911, five-panel screen, distemper on paper laid down on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Gift of Enid A. Haupt 1998.47.1

The apartment houses show the unfinished paper touched with quick strokes of black and gray to suggest windows and doors. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec introduced Vuillard to this technique of showing the uncoated support—whether brown paper, cardboard, panel, or canvas—as part of the finished work of art.
