This image of two women may be understood both as a genre scene and a religious one. Its use in 1964 as the basis for Prevalence of Ritual: Tidings suggests the latter. The importance of this image to Bearden is evident by its placement on the easel in his 1981 work Profile/Part II, The Thirties: The Artist with Painting and Model.
