Echoing the combined use of figuration and abstraction that Bearden admired in the work of Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, this oil is from a series of watercolors and related oils entitled Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejías. They are based on the 1935 poem of that title by another Spaniard, Federico García Lorca; the title of this oil painting is a line from that poem.
