Romare Bearden, Prevalence of Ritual: Tidings, 1964

This is another of the four collages Bearden included under the 1964 series title "Prevalence of Ritual," a term that has remained essential to our understanding of his art. See also Prevalence of Ritual: Conjur Woman. The "prevalence of ritual" phrase became most fully associated with Bearden's concerns when it was used in the title of his 1971 retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York: Romare Bearden: The Prevalence of Ritual.
