Romare Bearden, Madeline Jones’ Wonderful Garden, 1977 Madeline Jones was among the people Bearden recalled in collages depicting Mecklenburg County memories. She and Maudell Sleet remained in his mind in the context of their sumptuous gardens, the bounty from which they shared with children such as Romare who wandered by. The richness of texture and color that pervade this collage surface suggests the painterly character of many late works. |
