Subjects: Stories

Bearden's splendid library attests to his immense concern with world literature. In addition, his knowledge of art history would have introduced him to a wide variety of themes. His narrative motifs include scenes from the Bible and from African-American history. They also record the results of his own research for specific projects such as mural commissions; he completed designs for more than a dozen of them in such diverse materials as paper collage, paint on canvas, mosaic tesserae, ceramic tile, and faceted glass.
