Manet was also deliberate in creating a sense of improvisation. Long, quick-looking strokes of paint suggest rather than describe: the streaks of gray and brown beside the girl's dress stand for the railroad track below her; the thin dash of white paint across blue marks detailing on the woman's twill dress.
