Maxime
Lalanne, Demolitions for the Opening of the Rue des Ecoles, unknown
date.
Paris was transformed during Manet's time under the direction of
Baron
Haussmann, prefect of the Seine. Old neighborhoods were torn down to make
way for wide boulevards; new buildings and bridges were constructed. Rubble
was a constant reminder of both urban renewal and the removal of whatever
and whoever stood in its way.
