Thomas Moran, Lower Manhattan from Communipaw, New Jersey, 1880, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, Maryland
Equally notable are Moran's industrial scenes of the early 1880s. One of
the most impressive is Lower Manhattan from Communipaw, New Jersey.
Looking across the Hudson River from the sugar refineries on the Jersey
waterfront, Moran offered a shimmering view of the Manhattan skyline. Moran was
extraordinarily adept at capturing the reflective interplay of sunlight,
water, and a city's façade.
