  
 Stencilled hands at Castillofrom Art of the Cave Dweller: A Study of the Earliest Artistic Activites of Man by G. Baldwin Broan, New York, R.V. Coleman, 1927
Like the colored handprints pressed on ancient cave walls by shaman-artists, Pollock's handprints physically branded his work. Similar forms also appear prominently in his classic poured painting from 1950, Lavender Mist.
