CARL JUNG (Swiss, 1875-1961) was a psychoanalyst and prolific author who explored
the significance of universal archetypes of the collective unconscious. Jung's theories, popularized
in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s, were embraced by the abstract expressionists. Many incorporated such
universal mythic symbolism in their paintings in an effort to create an art that was "tragic and timeless."
