The artist models a relief portrait of the American painter William Merritt Chase. Saint-Gaudens holds clay in his left hand, while probably adding a round of clay to the relief to create Chase's palette. A sponge for moistening the clay rests on his easel, behind which the scaffolding for the Shaw Memorial can be glimpsed.
