The military records and pension requests of soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts
Regiment, collected in the National Archives in Washington, D.C., indicate, among
other information: that recruits came from 24 states, that one-quarter of them were from
slave states, and that among them were barbers, boatmen, laborers, cabinetmakers,
one dentist, and one druggist. Research of these documents is being conducted by
Edwin Redkey, State University of New York at Purchase.
