After the original painting was cut apart, Manet needed to make sense of the top of the bull's back, which now lay detached from the rest of its body in the upper fragment of the canvas. It appears that he raised the head, horns, and tail of the bull, and in so doing provided a focus for the bullfighter at the far right.
