Detail of x-radiographs showing the alignment of The Bullfight and The Dead Toreador

The x-radiograph makes it possible to use the small figures, visible beneath the bull, as a guide in aligning the canvases. The figures' legs reach into The Dead Toreador, while their bodies are in The Bullfight. Likewise, one can follow the white stockings and feet of the two existing bullfighters into the bottom tacking margin of The Bullfight and to the very top of the canvas of The Dead Toreador.

The painting was also executed on an unusually fine-weave fabric. By following the most pronounced vertical threads one can align the two paintings, confirming that the two canvases are fragments of one large composition.
