Detail of x-radiograph of The Dead Toreador

The only significant shift in the figure itself is a repositioning of the feet. Whether this change was made before or after the painting was exhibited at the Salon cannot be determined by the x-radiographs. By revealing the relative densities of artists' materials, x-radiography is often helpful in identifying compositions or changes hidden beneath the visible image. The densest areas (for example the metal tacks at the edges or the lead white paint of the stockings) appear white in the x-ray image; the x-rays cannot penetrate the material. The least dense materials, such as areas left in reserve or thinly applied paint, appear darker. Since all the layers are superimposed, one cannot necessarily distinguish the sequence of the changes in an x-radiograph.
