X-radiograph of The Dead Toreador

X-radiograph of The Bullfight

Because of the difference in the scale of the figures and in the handling of the brushwork and the palette, it is hard to imagine that the two works were once part of the same painting. Yet early in the century the two paintings were inventoried as fragments of the painting entered in the Salon. The relationship between the images became more convincing in 1982 when x-radiographs of both were studied side by side.
