There is no record of the original painting as it was shown in the Salon
other than contemporary caricatures. In the example at left, the figures have been turned
into wooden toys, lampooning what was perceived as the stiff, primitive
character of Manet's forms and the infantile mind of the creator.
These caricatures and verbal descriptions are the only evidence we have of the original
composition before it was cut apart, although much more has been learned in recent years through
x-radiography. |
