Vermeer exhibition Vermeer, The Art of Painting , c. 1666-1667, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Overview: Visitors to the National Gallery of Art will have the extraordinary opportunity to see Johannes Vermeer's (1632-1675) masterpiece The Art of Painting(c. 1666-1667), one of the great treasures in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. This large painting was important to Vermeer, and he kept it in his possession throughout his lifetime. The Art of Painting is an allegorical image that explores the complex relationship between art and history and the importance of the artist's role in society. It will be installed with the four paintings by Vermeer from the Gallery's permanent collection: Woman Holding a Balance(c. 1664), A Lady Writing(c. 1665), Girl with the Red Hat(c. 1665/1666), and Girl with a Flute(probably 1665/1670, attributed to Vermeer).
