infrared

Conservators use infrared light to examine paintings. It can penetrate varnish and paint layers to reveal underdrawings and compositional changes beneath the surface.
Infrared has a spectral range beyond that of visible light. Images can be photographed (infrared photograph) or recorded with a specially adapted video camera (infrared reflectogram).
