Really Old Masters: Age, Infirmity, and Reinvention

Lectures are held in the East Building Auditorium (eba) at 2:00 p.m. Lectures are free and open to the public. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is not required.

1. Do I need a ticket to gain admittance?

No, like any Sunday lecture, the Mellon lectures are open to the public and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. You are your own ticket. You may not save places for people who have not yet arrived.

2. When will seating begin?

Auditorium doors will open at 1:30 p.m., and the lectures will begin at 2:00 p.m.

3.How many seats are available for this lecture?

There are 500 seats for the public in the East Building Auditorium. The next 60 people in line will be escorted to the East Building's small auditorium, where they can view a live video feed of the lecture. Altogether, 560 seats are available.

4. How will I know if I am among the first 560 people in line?

A National Gallery staff member will count those standing in line and inform the person who is number 500 and the person who is number 560. You must stay in line to hold your place, and you may not save space for someone who has not yet arrived.

5. What if I need to use the restroom while standing in line?

The East Building restrooms are near the Gallery Shop, to the left as you approach the moving walkway. Ask your neighbor to save your place.

8. May I leave either auditorium once I have been seated?

Yes, but saving seats is not permitted; we cannot guarantee that your seat will be open upon your return. Please let the staff member at the door know you are leaving the auditorium.

11. Will there be a book signing after the lectures?

Yes, on December 17, 2006. Books are available for purchase in the Gallery's Concourse Bookstore.

12. When and where will the book signing take place?

The lecture will last approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. A book signing will follow in the lobby area outside the auditorium.

13. What is the procedure for purchasing Simon Schama books?

Books by Simon Schama may be purchased in the Concourse Bookstore of the East Building.

14. How can I get my book signed?

There will be a line designated for the book signing in the Concourse lobby outside the East Building Auditorium.  Please join the line after you have made your purchase.  You may not save places for people who have not yet arrived or purchased books.

There is a limit of two books per person for the book signing.

There are restrooms to the left as you approach the moving walkway leading to the Concourse Bookstore. Ask your neighbor to save your place.
