Alexander Calder came from a family of artists. His father and grandfather, who were both also named Alexander Calder, were sculptors, and his mother was a portrait painter. As a kid, Calder made his own toys out of objects he found around the house. But his greatest invention was the "mobile"--a sculpture that moves, especially in response to air currents. Later, he made a standing sculpture called a "stabile." Cheval Rouge is one.
Even though this sculpture is abstract, you can still identify a strong, graceful, galloping red horse if you look closely. See it?
