Chairs that just can't sit still--boy, do I know how they feel. In fact, the next time my teacher asks me: "Gordon, why can't you sit still?" instead of mumbling some lame excuse, I'm going to ask her to please go to the Sculpture Garden at the National Gallery of Art and take a look at this sculpture. Maybe once she sees those chairs springing into stairs that leap into the air, she'll understand.


Sometimes an artist takes an ordinary object that you see everyday and don't think twice about and does something with it that makes you see that object in a whole new way. For example, who would have thought that I had anything in common with a chair?
