Looking at all the
decorations and his plush office, we can guess that Napoleon wanted to identify
himself with these qualities of leadership and public service. He believed
that he had those same qualities, and that France under his reign would
achieve greatness, as had ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Napoleon once
said, "By night I work for the welfare of my people, and by day, for their
glory."
