Rogier
van der Weyden, Saint George and the Dragon, 1432-1435, National
Gallery of Art, Ailsa Mellon Bruce Fund
Two
versions of this story exist. In one account, George slays the monster
with a single blow. In the other, he subdues the dragon with his
lance. The princess, using part of her costume as a leash, ties
her belt around the dragon's neck and leads it back to town, where
George kills it and saves the kingdom. Which version of the story
do you think the artist is showing us?
