Rogier van der Weyden, Saint George and the Dragon, 1432-1435, National Gallery of Art, Ailsa Mellon Bruce Fund

Why do you think Rogier van der Weyden chose to paint his picture so small? The owner may have wanted to view it privately, to hold it in his or her hands and consider its meaning.

How was the artist able to paint with such brilliance something that is SO small? He must have used a very delicate paintbrush. Experts also think he may have used a magnifying glass. The paint he used made a difference as well.
