Rogier van der Weyden, Saint George and the Dragon, 1432-1435, National Gallery of Art, Ailsa Mellon Bruce Fund

The dragon is an imaginary reptile that looks like a giant lizard. It is meant to be a SYMBOL, a picture that stands for an idea. For example, a heart shape (like a Valentine) is a symbol of love. When this picture was painted around five hundred years ago, dragons were considered symbols of evil. By killing the terrible beast, Saint George was protecting the townspeople from wickedness. The story was very popular, and it was told to young people to inspire thoughts and prayers about leading a good life.
