Watson owned the painting until his death in 1807. In his will, he left it to a boys' school in London. The plaque attached to the frame expressed Watson's hope that his story of survival against enormous odds would serve as an inspiration to troubled kids. (At the very least, it probably would teach them that it's not a good idea to go skinny-dipping in shark-infested waters!)
