Treasures of Peruvian Gold

October 14-November 28, 1965

Overview: 101 objects, pre-Columbian ceremonial and ornamental vessels, masks, figurines, and jewelry made of beaten gold, were on loan from 7 public and private collections in Peru. The exhibition, sponsored by the government of Peru, met with bitter protests that these national treasures should not leave the country. The show was then declared "the cornerstone of the cultural phase of the Alliance for Progress." The shipment arrived late in Washington because Hurricane Betsy had forced the plane to turn back to Lima. The exhibition was circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
