Festival Designs by Inigo Jones from the Collection of the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth
Overview: The 126 items in this exhibition, including 118 drawings for scenery and costumes for the court masques of James I and Charles I, a portrait bust, 5 stage set models, and 2 costume reconstructions, were lent by the Duke of Devonshire and the trustees of the Chatsworth settlement. Objects in the exhibition had been shown at Chatsworth during the summers of 1965 and 1966. The initial selection from more than 400 works was made by Thomas S. Wragg, librarian and keeper of the Devonshire collections, who accompanied the exhibition to the United States. Roy S. Strong, deputy keeper of the National Portrait Gallery in London, wrote the entries and introduction for the catalogue. The exhibition was organized and circulated by the International Exhibitions Foundation.
