One Hundred European Paintings and Drawings from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Leigh B. Block

Overview: 9 works by Georges Braque as well as examples by painters of the school of Paris were on view in this exhibition. In 1942 Mr. and Mrs. Leigh B. Block of Chicago bought their first still life by Braque. Since that time they had acquired more works of art of every period. Perhaps the most famous was the 1889 Self-Portrait of Vincent van Gogh, with the bandaged ear. Mr. Block, a director of Inland Steel, paid all costs of packing, shipping, and insurance. Mrs. Block was the daughter of Albert D. Lasker, a leader in American advertising. The exhibition was co-sponsored by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
