El Greco of Toledo
Overview: 66 catalogued paintings included 32 from Spain. Reflecting the political, religious, and artistic life of Toledo at the time of El Greco (1541-1614), the exhibition drew paintings and documents from Spanish churches and monasteries, and from museums and private collections in Europe and America. The exhibition was inspired by the cooperative spirit of the sister cities of Toledo, Spain, and Toledo, Ohio.
The Toledo Museum of Art organized the exhibition with the Museo del Prado, Madrid, the National Gallery of Art, and the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. Curators were Jonathan Brown, William B. Jordan, Richard L. Kagan, and Alfonso E. Perez Sanchez. Gaillard Ravenel and Mark Leithauser designed the exhibition with special assistance from William Jordan. Gordon Anson designed the lighting for the National Gallery.
The exhibition was supported by a grant from the American Express Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Arts, and by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
