Walker Evans: Subway Photographs and Other Recent Acquisitions

Overview: 66 Walker Evans photographs included Evans' Subway series, his earliest portraits of Berenice Abbott, his architectural studies, and examples of his work between 1945 and 1965 for Fortune magazine. The Subway series was given to the National Gallery in 1988 and 1990 by Kent and Marcia Minichiello. The other works in the exhibition were selected from recent gifts from Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Lunn Jr.; the Clive Gray family; Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Stern; Edward Lenkin and Katherine Meier; an anonymous donor; and from photographs purchased with support from the Goldsmith Foundation. Sarah Greenough, curator of photography, was the exhibition curator.
