Jan van Eyck's Annunciation
Overview: A focus exhibition of The Annunciation by Van Eyck was displayed with illuminations from 2 books of hours that illustrated the influence of French manuscript illumination on Van Eyck's iconography and style. The painting was returned to public view in the exhibition after a 2-year restoration. Andrew Mellon had acquired The Annunciation from Russia's Hermitage Museum in 1930 and donated it to the National Gallery when the museum was founded.
The exhibition curator was John Hand, curator of northern Renaissance paintings at the National Gallery of Art. The exhibition and accompanying brochure were made possible by The Circle of the National Gallery of Art.
