Robert Frank: Moving Out

October 2-December 31, 1994

Overview: 157 photographs, a book, and 2 videos by Robert Frank were presented, from his early work in Switzerland to images from his travels in Peru, France, Spain, England, and the United States. The exhibition, drawn largely from the Robert Frank collection at the National Gallery, was the first National Gallery exhibition devoted to a living photographer.

On Sunday evenings, from October 2 to December 4, a selection of Robert Frank's films and video works was shown in the East Building auditorium in conjunction with the exhibition. A special program, Among Friends: Allen Ginsberg, Robert Delpire, Jonas Mekas, and Ed Grazda on Robert Frank, was held Saturday, October 15, in the East Building auditorium. Curators were Sarah Greenough, curator of photographs at the National Gallery, and Philip Brookman, curator of photography and media arts, Corcoran Gallery of Art.

The exhibition was made possible by the Lannan Foundation and Polaroid Corporation. Additional support for the exhibition and its catalogue was provided by grants from The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Inc., Pro Helvetia, the Arts Council of Switzerland, and The Circle of the National Gallery of Art.
