Adriaen Brouwer: Youth Making a Face

September 24, 1995-February 11, 1996

Overview: A focus exhibition featured the recently acquired Youth Making a Face by Adriaen Brouwer, and 4 additional paintings, a manuscript, and a sculpture by the artist and his contemporaries. The installation inaugurated the newly constructed Dutch Cabinet Galleries, which were designed on an intimate scale to complement smaller Dutch and Flemish paintings from the permanent collection as well as related drawings, prints, and small sculpture. Curator of the exhibition was Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., curator of northern baroque paintings.

The exhibition was made possible by gifts from Juliet and Lee Folger/The Folger Fund, The Wunsch Foundation, and friends of Arthur Wheelock. The brochure was funded by The Circle of the National Gallery of Art.

Location: West Building, Main Floor, Dutch and Flemish Cabinet Galleries

Brochure: Adriaen Brouwer: Youth Making a Face, by Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., and Aneta Georgievska-Shine. Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art, 1995.
