Verrocchio’s David Restored: A Renaissance Bronze from the National Museum of the Bargello, Florence

Overview: Andrea del Verrocchio’s bronze statue of David was the focus for this exhibition, which celebrated the recent technical examination and restoration of the work by conservators at the Bargello with support from the High Museum, Atlanta. The restored statue was shown with the head of Goliath in its original placement between David’s feet. This was the first time that the statue had been on loan outside Florence. The sculpture was shown in Washington with 9 other works including 15th-century representations of David and sculptures by Verrocchio and his workshop.

The exhibition was organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, in collaboration with the National Museum of the Bargello, Florence. Eleonora Luciano, assistant curator of sculpture at the National Gallery, was the curator in Washington. The exhibition was supported by Worldspan, L.P. The conservation was supported by Steinhauslin Bank and Progetto Città, Florence. Additional support was provided by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and Associazione ‘Amici del Bargello.’
