Ancient Egyptian Sculpture

February 1–28, 1949

Overview: 28 small pieces spanned 3,000 years, from the Fourth Dynasty c. 2700 B.C. to Hellenistic 30 B.C. They had been exhibited at the British Museum in London before and after World War II. The most important single work was the obsidian head of Amenemhat III (Middle Kingdom 1800 B.C.). 12 new display cases were constructed by the staff for the exhibition. The works in this exhibition were lent to the National Gallery by C.S. Gulbenkian for an indefinite period.
