"On behalf of all of Carter’s longtime colleagues and friends at the National Gallery of Art, we are deeply saddened at the tragic news of his death. He was a gifted and brilliant director who served the nation and the world of art with unparalleled commitment and leadership and has left a great legacy."

--Earl A. Powell III, Director, National Gallery of Art
