National Gallery of Art Opens Exhibition Shop for "The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt"
Washington, DC--Books, gifts, and educational items related to The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt are offered in the special exhibition Shop on the concourse level of the East Building of the National Gallery of Art, June 30 -- October 14, 2002.
There is a large selection of books, posters, and postcards; a compact disc featuring music played by instruments from the era; stationery; and puzzles. Egyptian--inspired items include a silk and wool blend scarf with Egyptian motifs produced by the National Gallery of Art; unique silver and gold bracelets; exotic, jeweled earrings and necklaces; hand-painted images on papyrus, matted in gold frames and available in three sizes; glass trays with etched Egyptian motifs; gold-plated statues and other sculpture; alabaster vessels; canopic jars; papyrus paper and kits; hieroglyphic alphabets, and desk accessories. There is also a wide variety of children’s items available, such as toys, games, dolls, craft kits, mummy pencil cases, and a backpack.
The 256-page exhibition catalogue, co-published by the National Gallery of Art and Prestel, is richly illustrated with approximately 190 color photographs. The catalogue, which was co-edited by Erik Hornung, professor emeritus of Egyptology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, and Betsy M. Bryan, Alexander Badawy Professor of Egyptian Art and Archaeology and chair of the department of Near East Studies, The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and also guest curator for the exhibition, contains essays by them and Fayza Haikal, professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo; entries on each object; a selected guide to the gods; a chronology; a glossary; and a bibliography. It is available for $30 in softcover and $65 in hardcover.
The Quest for Immortality in Ancient Egypt, a thirty-minute film produced by the National Gallery of Art and made possible by the HRH Foundation, explores the Egyptian burial practices of the New Kingdom and the journey from death, through mummification and burial, into the afterworld. The videotape is available for $21.95.
