Tours

The Architecture of the National Gallery of Art East Building
October 7, 15, 23, and 31 at 2:00 p.m.

National Gallery of Art senior architect James Grupe leads 50-minute walking tours of the East Building, providing a unique architectural perspective on its history, design, construction, materials, and function.

1900 to Now: An Introduction to the East Building Collection
Monday-Friday, 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 11:30 a.m., 1:30 a.m , and 3:30 p.m.

Postcard Tours

For an independent tour of notable works in the East Building, borrow a set of postcards at the East Building Art Information Desk: "20th-Century Collection" (for adults) and "Things that Walk, Talk, and Squawk" (for families).

All tours meet at the East Building Art Information Desk.

A Place to Be

Tracing the design and construction of the National Gallery of Art East Building, this documentary features the work of architect I.M. Pei, as well as artists Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, and Anthony Caro. (Charles Guggenheim, 1978, 60 mins.)

Concerts

The 62nd Season of the William Nelson Cromwell and F. Lammot Belin Concerts at the National Gallery of Art, under the direction of George Manos, will be presented in honor of the 25th anniversary of the East Building. Concerts are on Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the West Building, West Garden Court, on October 5, 12, 19, and 26; November 2, 9, 16, and 23; and December 7, 14, 21, and 28. General Information

The National Gallery of Art and its Sculpture Garden are at all times free to the public. They are located on the National Mall between 3rd and 9th Streets at Constitution Avenue NW, and are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed on December 25 and January 1. Visitors will be asked to present all carried items for inspection upon entering the East and West Buildings. Checkrooms are free of charge and located at each entrance. Luggage and other oversized bags must be presented at the 4th Street entrances to the East or West Building to permit x-ray screening and must be deposited in the checkrooms at those entrances. For the safety of visitors and the works of art, nothing may be carried into the Gallery on a visitor's back. Any bag or other items that cannot be carried reasonably and safely in some other manner must be left in the checkrooms. Items larger than 17 x 26 inches cannot be accepted by the Gallery or its checkrooms.
