National Gallery of Art's Garden CafÉ Offers Spanish-Style Buffet During the Exhibition "Goya: Images of Women"

Washington, DC -- In celebration of the National Gallery of Art's exhibition Goya: Images of Women, the Garden Café is offering a Spanish-style buffet through June 2, 2002.

The buffet includes grilled salmon with romesco (a traditional Spanish sauce made of roasted ground almonds, peppers, and olive oil) and tortilla espagnole (a classic baked omelette made with sautéed potatoes and roasted onions). The buffet also features a wide assortment of cheeses, among them a tangy Manchego, smoky Idiazábal, savory Majon with paprika-scented rind, and robust Cabrales, one of the world's heartiest blue-veined cheeses. The selections are accompanied by membrillo, a traditional quince paste. The Garden Café will also offer its à la carte menu featuring a prosciutto, mozzarella, and sundried tomato sandwich and chilled poached salmon with asparagus spears and baby greens, served with a watercress sauce. Seating in the Garden Café on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Garden Café is open 11:30 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6:30 pm on Sundays during the Gallery’s concert season, which ends on June 30 (concerts begin at 7:00 pm). Thereafter, the Garden Café will close at 4:00 pm on Sundays.

The Garden Café is located at the Sixth Street and Constitution Avenue entrance of the West Building. In addition to the Garden Café, visitors may dine in the Cascade Café and Espresso Bar in the Concourse between the West and East buildings or in the Pavilion Café in the Sculpture Garden.

The National Gallery of Art and its Sculpture Garden, located on the National Mall between Third and Ninth Streets at Constitution Avenue, NW, are open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. Exhibition Background and Support

Goya: Images of Women is the first major exhibition dedicated to an examination of the artist's representation of women, including portraits of many of the most powerful women of Madrid. Drawn primarily from the collection of the Museo Nacional del Prado, approximately 115 paintings, drawings, prints, tapestry cartoons, and tapestries--some of which have never traveled to the United States--provide insight into the artist's lifelong fascination with this theme.

The exhibition is organized by the Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

The exhibition is made possible by generous support from The Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation and

General Dynamics/General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas.

The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
