NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART HOSTS JIM DINE INTERVIEW
New Exhibition of more than 100 Drawings opens March 21, 2004

Washington, DC--Artist Jim Dine will be interviewed by National Gallery of Art curator of modern prints and drawings Judith Brodie on Sunday, March 21, at 2:00 pm in the East Building auditorium. Dine will also read from his catalogue essay, "Putting Down Marks (my life as a draftsman)." Following the interview, Dine will take questions from the audience and sign copies of the exhibition catalogue he had a role in designing. On the same day, the new exhibition Drawings of Jim Dine will open to the public in the West Building and remain on view through August 1, 2004.

The first major survey of his drawings in over 15 years, the exhibition will include more than 100 of his drawings from about 1970 to the present. Often associated with Pop art and the Happenings of the 1960s, Dine became known for his paintings, prints, and sculptures--works that employed recurring themes such as tools, hearts, and bathrobes. This exhibition will focus on subjects for which Dine is renowned, such as his iconic images of tools, along with his less publicized themes from the eighties and nineties, including images of owls, studies of ancient sculpture and nature.

General Information

The National Gallery of Art and its Sculpture Garden are at all times free to the public. They are located on the National Mall between 3rd and 9th Streets at Constitution Avenue NW, and are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed on December 25 and January 1. Visitors will be asked to present all carried items for inspection upon entering. Checkrooms are free of charge and located at each entrance. Luggage and other oversized bags must be presented at the 4th Street entrances to the East or West Building to permit x-ray screening and must be deposited in the checkrooms at those entrances. For the safety of visitors and the works of art, nothing may be carried into the Gallery on a visitor's back. Any bag or other items that cannot be carried reasonably and safely in some other manner must be left in the checkrooms. Items larger than 17 by 26 inches cannot be accepted by the Gallery or its checkrooms.
