BIOGRAFIA: DAVID ALAN BROWN

Curatore dei dipinti italiani, National Gallery of Art

Dopo il baccalaureato in letteratura inglese a Harvard College nel 1964, David Alan Brown è andato a Cambridge University in Gran Bretagna con una borsa di studio Fulbright e poi ha conseguito il dottorato (Ph.D.) in storia dell’arte a Yale University nel 1973. Dopo un breve periodo di insegnamento a Yale, nel 1974 è diventato il primo curatore di dipinti rinascimentali italiani alla National Gallery of Art, dove ha organizzato diverse mostre con prestiti internazionali, fra cui Berenson and the Connoisseurship of Italian Painting nel 1979, Raphael and America nel 1983, Titian, Prince of Painters nel 1991, Lorenzo Lotto nel 1997 e Virtue and Beauty: Renaissance Portraits of Women nel 2001.

Autore di numerosi saggi eruditi e recensioni, Brown ha scritto una monografia su Andrea Solario, pittore lombardo del cinquecento, che nel 1987 ha vinto il Premio Salimbeni, il più prestigioso in Italia per libri sull’arte. Il suo studio su Leonardo da Vinci: Origins of a Genius pubblicato dalla Yale University Press (New Haven e Londra, 1988) ha ricevuto nel 2000 il Sir Bannister Fletcher Award per il libro più meritorio sull’arte o sull’architettura. Questo libro presenta l’evidenza della prima prova superstite in pittura del giovane Leonardo: una parte del dipinto del suo maestro Verrocchio Tobiolo e l’Angelo nella National Gallery a Londra. Brown ha pubblicato recentemente un articolo sostenendo che un quadro al Prado (Madrid) è la prima opera superstite di Tiziano (“Titian and Bellini: From Pupil to Rival,” Arte cristiana 93, 2005).

Riconoscendo il suo contributo alla conoscenza e apprezzamento della cultura italiana in America, il Presidente della Repubblica italiana l’ha insignito nel febbraio del 2003 dell’Ordine di Merito.

General Information

The National Gallery of Art and its Sculpture Garden are at all times free to the public. They are located on the National Mall between 3rd and 9th Streets at Constitution Avenue NW, and are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed on December 25 and January 1. Visitors will be asked to present all carried items for inspection upon entering the East and West Buildings. Checkrooms are free of charge and located at each entrance. Luggage and other oversized bags must be presented at the 4th Street entrances to the East or West Building to permit x-ray screening and must be deposited in the checkrooms at those entrances. For the safety of visitors and the works of art, nothing may be carried into the Gallery on a visitor's back. Any bag or other items that cannot be carried reasonably and safely in some other manner must be left in the checkrooms. Items larger than 17 x 26 inches cannot be accepted by the Gallery or its checkrooms.
