National Gallery of Art Press Office

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Gallery of Art was created
in 1937 for the people of the United States of America by a joint resolution
of Congress, accepting the gift of financier and art collector Andrew W.
Mellon. During the 1920s, Mr. Mellon began collecting with the intention
of forming a gallery of art for the nation in Washington. In 1937, the
year of his death, he promised his collection to the United States. Funds
for the construction of the West Building were provided by The A. W. Mellon
Educational and Charitable Trust. On March 17, 1941, President Franklin
D. Roosevelt accepted the completed building and the collections on behalf
of the people of the United States of America.

Major Early Drawings by Pablo Picasso on View at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, January 29–May 6, 2012

Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was the greatest draftsman of the 20th century, exploring every technique from a single line to explosions of color. Through some 60 works, "Picasso's Drawings, 1890–1921: Reinventing Tradition" presents the dazzling development of the artist as a draftsman during the first 30 years of his career, from the precocious academic exercises of his youth to his radical innovations of cubism and collage. On view at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, from January 29 through May 6, 2012, the exhibition includes many of Picasso's finest drawings, watercolors, and pastels, borrowed from American and European public and private collections—including the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte—and seven drawings from the Gallery's collection of 278 works by Picasso.

National Gallery of Art Seeks Drawings, Watercolors, and Paintings
on Paper by Mark Rothko for Essential Reference Volumes

(Updated February 4, 2008) As part of a worldwide initiative,
the National Gallery of Art is seeking information about drawings, watercolors,
and paintings on paper in public and private collections by the American
artist Mark Rothko (1903-1970). The National Gallery of Art is publishing
a multivolume catalogue raisonné, "Mark Rothko: The Works on Paper," which
will document more than 2,700 objects that are largely unknown to both
art specialists and the public. Demonstrating the range of Rothko's creative
achievements, these volumes will be the definitive historical record
of Rothko's oeuvre on paper for decades to come.

Andy Goldsworthy, "Roof"

British artist Andy Goldsworthy has been commissioned to create
a site-specific sculpture for the National Gallery of Art's East Building.
The project, "Roof," will comprise approximately nine stacked slate,
low-profile hollow domes five and a half feet high and 27 feet in diameter,
with centered oculi two feet in diameter. The installation will run the
length of the ground-level garden area on the north side of the East
Building along Pennsylvania Avenue. Goldsworthy selected the domical
form, with which he has worked since the late 1970s, as a counterpoint
to the many architectural domes in Washington, D.C. The artist, his assistant,
and a team of five British wallers will begin installing the work on
November 29, 2004, pause for the holidays, and return to finish by the
beginning of February 2005.

Sol LeWitt, "Wall Drawing #65"

Four draftspeople are executing contemporary artist Sol LeWitt's "Wall
Drawing #65." Lines not short, not straight, crossing and touching, drawn
at random, using four colors, uniformly dispersed with maximum density,
covering the entire surface of the wall (first installation 1971), on
an interior wall of the concourse level galleries of the East Building,
National Gallery of Art. The drawing began on Monday, May 10, and will
continue through Wednesday, May 19, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in full view
of the public. The work was donated to the National Gallery of Art by
well-known collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel in 2001.
