Held in conjunction with the exhibitions
The Andy Goldsworthy Project and Andy Goldsworthy: Roof

Overview

British artist Andy Goldsworthy will speak about his work and his current project, Roof, a site-specific sculpture for the National Gallery of Art. Roof will comprise nine hollow, low-profile domes of stacked slate, each with a centered oculus, and will run the length of the ground-level garden area on the north side of the Gallery's East Building. Goldsworthy selected the domical form as a counterpoint to the many architectural domes in Washington, DC.

Andy Goldsworthy was born in Cheshire, England, and currently resides in Scotland. Over the past twenty-five years, Goldsworthy has gained a significant reputation for works both ephemeral and permanent that draw out the endemic character of a place. The artist works with natural materials such as leaves, sand, ice, and stone that often originate from the local site.
