On the occasion of the exhibition Picasso: The Cubist Portraits of Fernande Olivier, Leo Steinberg revisits Picasso's cubism, a topic to which he has contributed groundbreaking critical insight. Steinberg, a scholar, teacher, and critic whose areas of expertise include both Renaissance and modern art, has had a profound influence on various fields of study. This lecture reflects an essential premise of his work, namely, that in its level of conceptual complexity and achievement, Picasso's art demands--and rewards--our deepest engagement.
