East Building Concourse, Education Studio

Cubism was a revolutionary art movement whose impact is felt to this day. The selected readings for this program range from eyewitness accounts of its development to those with greater art historical perspective. Readings and discussions will prepare participants for a gallery tour of relevant art.

Read in advance:
"Cubism" in Herschel B. Chipp's Theories of Modern Art: A Source Book by Artists and Critics, pages 193–280 (University of California Press, 1968 and reprints).

If time is limited, read the introduction (193–199); writings by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler from The Rise of Cubism, 1915 (248–259); and individual statements by Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Fernand Léger (259–280).
